Who can register an .edu.ng domain?

An applicant must be an approved and accredited degree-awarding tertiary institution in Nigeria. It must be legally established and hold provisional or full approval from the relevant recognised authority. The registry makes the final eligibility decision.

Can a primary or secondary school register .edu.ng?

Generally, no. NiRA reserves .edu.ng for qualifying degree-awarding tertiary institutions. Approved primary, secondary, and other non-degree schools should consider .sch.ng.

What documents are required?

Prepare evidence that the institution is registered or incorporated under Nigerian law and evidence of provisional or full academic approval from the relevant authority. The institution name in the documents should support the requested domain. Further clarification may be requested during review.

Does payment guarantee approval?

No. Payment and availability do not replace eligibility review. The institution, documents, intended use, and relationship between the official name and requested domain must satisfy the restricted namespace rules.

Can a faculty or department register a separate domain?

A faculty, department, or unit should normally use a subdomain beneath the qualifying institution’s approved domain, such as engineering.yourinstitution.edu.ng. NiRA’s policy treats departments and units as subdomains rather than separate institution-level domains.

Can an institution hold multiple .edu.ng domains?

An approved institution may apply for multiple domains only where each relates to the academic institution and not merely to a department or unit. Every requested name remains subject to registry review.

How long does approval take?

Restricted registration is not instant. Timing depends on the completeness, validity, readability, and consistency of the application. Prepare the legal and accreditation evidence before ordering and wait for confirmed activation before publishing the address.

Can I connect the domain to existing hosting and email?

Yes. After activation, DNS records can connect the domain to an existing website, admissions service, student portal, learning platform, research repository, or email provider. The domain and hosting do not need to be purchased at the same time.

Does .edu.ng guarantee higher search rankings?

No extension guarantees rankings. A Nigerian academic domain communicates local and institutional relevance, but visibility still depends on useful content, technical quality, accessibility, performance, reputation, and links.
