NiRA Registry

NiRA: Nigeria’s .ng Domain Registry

The organisation behind Nigeria’s internet address.

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association manages the .ng country-code domain and its registration database. NiRA sets the framework for Nigerian domain names; registrars handle registrations and day-to-day domain services.

Your registration path

NiRA Runs the Registry. Your Provider Handles the Service.

What NiRA Manages

NiRA maintains the .ng registry and defines policies for the namespace. Its registry, registrar and registrant model keeps the central database distinct from the customer’s registration service.

See NiRA’s registration model.

Where to Manage Your Domain

Use your domain provider for a registration, renewal, transfer or nameserver change. NiRA does not register domains directly for end users.

If your domain is with us, sign in to your Truehost account to review it.

Choose a suitable ending

Common .ng Domain Categories

A shorter name and a category-specific name serve different needs. Check the rules for the ending you choose.

.gov.ngGovernment bodies and agenciesA restricted category with its own approval requirements.

Selected categories, not a complete list. Consult NiRA’s domain policy for the applicable rules.

Check the Record Before Making Changes.

Find the Registrar

A WHOIS or RDAP lookup can identify the registrar, nameservers, registration events and public status. It does not guarantee that personal contact details will be visible.

Keep Hosting and Registration Separate

Changing your hosting provider does not always require a registrar transfer. You may only need to update nameservers or DNS records through your current provider.

Read NiRA’s nameserver guidance.

Questions About NiRA

Can I buy a domain directly from NiRA?

NiRA operates the .ng registry and directs end users to accredited registrars for registration. Search the exact name you want, then place the order through a registrar or domain provider.

That provider is also your first point of contact for renewals, transfers and changes to the domain after registration.

Does NiRA set the price I pay Truehost?

NiRA manages the registry; the price you pay is quoted by the provider taking your order. Search your exact domain to see the current registration price.

Before checkout, check the renewal price and registration term as well. The amount for a particular name can differ from a standard extension price.

Is every .ng category open to everyone?

No. Some categories are open broadly, while others have eligibility rules. For example, .edu.ng and .gov.ng are restricted to qualifying organisations.

Check NiRA’s domain policy and confirm any required documents with your provider before you apply. A successful name search does not remove a category’s eligibility rules.

Who changes the nameservers for my .ng domain?

Make the request through the registrar or provider managing the domain. If it is in your Truehost account, review its domain settings there or ask our team for help.

Changing nameservers points the domain at a different DNS service; it does not, by itself, move website files or email messages. Plan those services separately before making the change.

Will registering a .ng domain move my website or email?

No. Registration secures the name. Your website needs hosting, and email needs a working mail service. If you already use those services elsewhere, decide how the new domain will connect to them before changing DNS settings.

Need to Check an Existing Domain?

Use a registration lookup to find its public registrar, status and nameservers.
