A .sch.ng domain is a restricted Nigerian school address. The Nigeria Internet Registration Association, or NiRA, places it under the .ng country-code domain and reserves it for approved primary, secondary, and other non-degree-awarding institutions.

A school registers its name at the third level, producing an address such as schoolname.sch.ng.

People often call .sch.ng an extension or top-level domain in everyday conversation, but .ng is the actual country-code top-level domain.

The sch label creates a school-specific category beneath it.

How schoolname.sch.ng is built

Each part of the address has a separate job:

What it represents

ng

Nigeria’s country-code top-level domain

NiRA calls .sch.ng a closed second-level domain. The school adds its chosen label before it, so the complete registered name sits at the third level.

For example, a qualifying school named Bright Future Academy might apply for brightfutureacademy.sch.ng.

The example explains the structure; it does not confirm that the name is available or that the applicant qualifies.

Who the namespace is for

NiRA’s policy identifies three broad groups:

  • approved primary schools;

  • approved secondary schools; and

  • other approved institutions that do not award degrees.

The word “approved” is essential. A school needs the relevant Nigerian legal status and approval or accreditation from the appropriate government body or recognised authority.

The requested domain should also be the same as, or closely related to, the applicant’s name.

NiRA limits each approved school to one .sch.ng registration. That rule does not prevent a school from organising services under the main domain with subdomains, which we explain below.

This summary helps you identify the intended audience. Before applying, use our detailed domain requirements page to check the eligibility and evidence your school will need.

You can also consult the current NiRA policy for the controlling rules.

.sch.ng and .edu.ng solve different jobs

Both options sit inside Nigeria’s .ng namespace, but NiRA assigns them to different institution types.

Degree-awarding tertiary education

A university, polytechnic, or other degree-awarding tertiary institution should not choose .sch.ng simply because it is still assembling evidence for .edu.ng.

The institution should use the namespace for which it currently qualifies and follow the applicable policy.

Our .edu.ng guide explains the tertiary option clearly.

How .sch.ng differs from an open domain

An open domain category generally lets a much wider group register names on a first-come basis. Domains such as .com, .ng, .com.ng, .org, .net are open domains.

A restricted namespace adds an eligibility gate.

With .sch.ng, finding an available label is only one part of the application; the school must also fit NiRA’s category rules.

If an education business, tutor, software company, or informal learning project does not qualify as an approved school, an open extension may fit better.

Review the available Nigerian domain types before choosing.

What a school can build on one address

One approved domain can become the stable base for several public and private services.

A school might use:

  • schoolname.sch.ng for its main website;

  • admissions.schoolname.sch.ng for admissions information;

  • portal.schoolname.sch.ng for an authorised school portal; and

  • [email protected] for a role-based email address. (See our email plans)

The entries before the main name are subdomains, not extra .sch.ng registrations.

Their technical setup depends on the hosting, DNS, email, and application services the school chooses.

A domain name does not include a finished website by itself. The school still needs a website platform or developer, suitable school hosting, and an email service if it wants mailboxes on the domain.

What the domain does not prove

A precise domain choice gives a school a suitable Nigerian web address, but it should not carry claims it cannot support.

A .sch.ng domain does not, by itself:

  • verify every statement, programme, result, or staff profile on the website;

  • encrypt the website or protect accounts from weak passwords;

  • guarantee higher search rankings or visitor trust;

  • replace backups, access controls, updates, and monitoring; or

  • remove the need to maintain the school’s approval and registration details.

Those outcomes depend on the institution’s conduct and its technical setup.

The dedicated school benefits article examines what the namespace can realistically contribute without treating it as a security or ranking shortcut.

Check eligibility before you search

Start by confirming that the institution belongs in the .sch.ng category and that its proposed name reflects the approved school. This prevents a school from treating availability as proof of eligibility.

Once the evidence is ready, follow the registration steps for the application workflow.

When you are ready to check a name and submit the request through Truehost, register .sch.ng.
