Challenges affecting cloud computing services in Nigeria
Nigeria the potential African powerhouse in cloud computing is making great strides. It’s expected that the cloud computing in Nigeria will soon be like the Telecom industry in terms of coverage and provision market fit solutions.
There are a few challenges that have affected the growth of cloud computing in Nigeria as highlighted by a few white papers.
Internet connectivity and availability– remain one of the biggest challenge, Internet speed and availability in Nigeria need to really improve to foster better adoption rates of cloud computing services
Exposure and Knowledge levels around Cloud computing solutions – a few researches have highlighted fear of hacking as a big hindrance to cloud services adoption. Evangelism on cloud computing services can reduce this challenge
Lack of Technical Skills – with the growth in the market, Nigeria needs to provide more technical skills for this cloud computing industry – the people – the people must also be able to grow in depth in terms of skills set for application in the cloud computing industry.
Lack of a supportive legal framework has also been highlighted as one challenges – a few legislation are required in terms of how actively the government and her agencies who happen to be potentially biggest client can consume and adopt cloud computing services among other supportive roles.
Shortage of ICT infrastructure – the number of data centers in Nigeria need to improve. Shortage of infrastructure has led to high cost of infrastructure related services like collocations.
Insecurity – insecurity cases and the public image on security and stability in Nigeria have scared away a few investors who would foster growth of cloud computing through cloud computing investments.
